Ohio Chapter ASLA Welcomes Shannon Himes!

Ms. Himes was a litigator in the private sector before becoming a hearing officer for the Ohio Department of Public Safety in 2004. Legislative: Occupational Boards Sunset Bill Enacted!

Legislative: Occupational Boards Sunset Bill Enacted!

Senate Bill 255, to sunset each occupational board unless affirmatively re-enacted, passed the Senate and House, with ratification of all amendments, now awaiting the Governor’s consideration.

Unclear is whether the Governor might veto the legislation because of the difficulty it will cause in managing executive agency boards.  Every year, 20% of all boards will expire, requiring affirmative renewal.  At risk include the Architects, Landscape Architects, Engineers, Surveyors, and Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Boards.

The legislation also prohibits creation of any new board until an independent study verifies that the intent is to protect the health and safety of the public, and is not enacted merely to hinder competition.

In a last-minute deal, the General Assembly “log-rolled” House Bill 211 into the passed version of the sunset legislation to prohibit new boards. The HB 211 language creates a new Ohio Home Inspector Board to license and regulate home inspections.

KSU/ College of Architecture and Environmental Design Education Presentation

Landscape Architects working in either fragile ecosystems along exposed coastlines and barrens or the canyons of densely populated urban fabric, face the challenge of reversing ecological degradation in the age of the Anthropocene. Recent work in delicate, sensitive ecosystems, including successes and opportunities in design and building high-quality and functional landscapes affected by climate change will be presented.

Virginia Burt creates landscapes and gardens of meaning for residential clients, healthcare facilities, and institutional organizations through her eponymous firm, founded in 1996. For over 30 years, Virginia has created healing gardens and sacred spaces that reveal their natural context and sensitively support those who use them. Clients including Cleveland’s University Hospitals and Ontario’s Juravinski Cancer Centre, value Virginia’s respect for place and human wellness dimension of each project. Virginia’s international award winning work is widely recognized, including National awards from both ASLA and CSLA.
