Designing the Future City - for Human and Global Health

The urban planning profession has well over 150 years of history devising theory and practice to improve the quality of life and public health in cities. Yet we live in a time when public health, especially non-communicable chronic diseases, addictions and similar non-pathogenic diseases are increasing. And in this unique year, the entire global population has become aware of the existence and emergence of new health threats which require new solutions. Even best practice thinking about social space, public space, streets and transportation that was current months ago, is now in question.

New stresses are emerging on human and global systems, technologies and climate being at the forefront. Now is the time for designers to learn from their history and the consequences of prior theory, to lead to a more comprehensive theories and tools for action to combat these forces. In our rapidly urbanizing world we must find ways, by planning and design, to improve the true qualities of life and the environment to be more adaptable to rapid change and resilient to impact. This presentation will set the context for planning and design professionals to better understand how their own expertise and practice can contribute to a better future for Human and Global Health.

    Speaker: Mark W. Johnson, FASLA
