How can we as Landscape architects make apparent the uniqueness of place and the environment, inspiring a creatively rich design process?  This conversation explores ways in which the initial conceptual making process and immediate reflective studies broadens our understanding of place, our creative process in the built environment.

Gary Smith is an environmental artist and landscape architect who celebrates the connection between people and nature. As an artist he specializes in temporary environmental installation art, usually working collaboratively with staff and including public participation. Recent installations include “NEST: Creating Home,” an exhibition of ten installations, at Filoli in Woodside CA (2019); “Brushwood Dance” at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs AR (2016-18); and three sculptural installations for “FLOCK: Birds on the Brink” at Ganna Walska Lotusland in Santa Barbara CA (2015). He began his career as an environmental artist in 2008 with “Art Goes Wild”, a sequence of eleven site-specific works at Garden in the Woods in Framingham MA. He is currently developing an installation for the Pittsburgh Botanical Garden in Pittsburgh PA, which will refer to the site’s history as a coal mine transformed into a public garden.

His award-winning landscape architectural work includes “Enchanted Woods”, a woodland fantasy for children and families at Winterthur Museum and Garden in Winterthur DE; “The Luci and Ian Family Garden” at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center in Austin TX; and Ojos y Manos, an ethnobotanical garden at the Santa Fe Botanical Garden in Santa Fe NM. Each of these gardens includes artful components using stone, metal, ceramic tile, and natural wood.

In 2019 Gary was Visiting Artist in the Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University, where he assisted professor Ryan Carrington in developing a new course, “Site-Specific Art: Landscapes.” In 2016 he held the Nadine Carter Russell Chair in the School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University.

His book From Art to Landscape: Unleashing Creativity in Garden Design, received a Garden Book Award from the American Horticultural Society.

Cathy Marshall is a landscape architect, artist and educator whose work focuses on the role of representation of site phenomena and the creative design process through art.  Marshalls work is inspired by natural forces and spatial memory. Marshall's cartographic drawings and large format photographic montages reveal the phenomena of change in the landscape making apparent the what is lost or invisible. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Art History at Ithaca College and a Masters of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, where she was awarded the Penny White Traveling Fellowship. She was on the Landscape Architecture faculty at Louisiana State University until 2017.  Her work on documenting complex landscape conditions has been published in Landscape Architecture Magazine and the Journal of Landscape Architecture (JOLA) and chapters for Transforming with Water and Perspectives on Creativity.

Her work has been presented at international and national conferences, including International Federation of Landscape Architects, European Council of Landscape Architects, Alliance of Preservation Technologies, International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts, Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture, Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation, Association for Preservation Technology, Environmental Design Research Association and the Iraqi War Memorial Symposium. Her studio teaching has been awarded honor awards by the National ASLA student awards committee.
