In the 1800s, combined sewer overflow (CSO) system was first introduced in Cincinnati, which caused 11 billion gallons of sewage-mixed stormwater flowing into the city’s rivers and streams during heavy rainstorms each year. This makes Cincinnati become one of the top five cities with the most annual CSOs in the United States. Along with combined sewer overflow, the city also suffers from floods as well as the stormwater which carries oil, animal feces, and other pollutants. Almost 40 years after the Clean Water Act which was meant to stop such pollution, these issues still persist. Moreover, Cincinnati is not the only one that is addressing Federal Consent Decrees for CSOs within the Ohio River Watershed. Other large cities suffering the same issues within the same watershed include Louisville, KY and Pittsburgh, PA.

Most of the previous work on urban wastewater treatment has been within the purview of the engineering professions. As a consequence, bigger pipes and larger treatment plants have become the standard way to resolve wastewater issues in cities around the world. These engineered control systems have impinged urban space and over-simplified the complexities of urban space in relation to wastewater management systems. This project provides an overview of the research process of investigating wastewater complexities with biochemical knowledge and a vision to break down silos in wastewater management with landscape strategies. At this core, this project proposes new forms of emergent landscape infrastructure that are systemically interconnected and performing across vast territories.

    Learning Objectives

    1. To develop a complex understanding of the compositional, spatial, ecological, and social processes and values of wastewater & stormwater management inherent in a public space to craft interventions that integrate biochemical knowledge and scientific experiments.
    2. To explore methods for creatively investigating scientific experiments as a generative design practice for proposing innovative strategies for landscape transformation.
    3. To introduce the systemic design framework for effectively integrating science and design for landscape architecture.
