The Cleveland Tree Plan: Reforesting the Forest City- Chad Clink (1 HR)

Learn about a strategic plan to restore the most enduring and sustainable components of the urban environment - trees. Once a vibrant green city nestled against the North Coast of Lake Erie, Cleveland today barely resembles its once canopied self. In order to restore the Forest City moniker a Plan was born rooted in science and focused on bringing arboriculture & urban forestry to the people. Through partnership and collaboration, The Cleveland Tree Coalition hopes to make Cleveland the Forest City once again.

Connecting Children to Nature through Design – Kathryn Clusman (1 HR)

Getting children engaged with the natural world and excited by it is vital to creating new generations of environmentalists and naturalists. How can we design spaces to foster children’s connection with nature and encourage their passion for the environment?  We will take a look at the features of two very distinct nature play areas (Hershey Children’s Garden and Buckeye Buds Adventure Woods). We will also talk about important design elements to keep in mind when you design your own children’s space.  Lastly, we will discuss lessons we learned and a few things to avoid.

Holden Arboretum Tour – Chad Clink & Kathryn Clusman (1HR)

After the presentations, participants will tour Holden for inspiration on trees and woody plants to include in landscape designs. Stops at the Kalberger Emergent Tower and Much Canopy Walk will allow for reflection on the importance of trees for our regional communities. Stop at the Buckeye Buds Adventure Woods to allow for continued discussion of Nature Play areas. Cultural practices and design considerations of Arboretum will be discussed.
