    OCASLA 2017 Professional + Student Awards Program



    Past awards juries have valued both large and small scale works that exhibit creativity while solving some of the world's most complex issues. This year's Award Recipients will receive publication in the 2017 Awards Booklet, OCASLA website, and the 2018 April issue of Ohio Magazine.The Awards Booklet will be available at the GALA 2017 which will be held in Columbus, Ohio in the fall.

    The OCASLA Awards Program features six juried categories:

    •          General Design | Constructed
    •          General Design | Not Constructed
    •          Residential
    •          Planning + Analysis
    •          Communications + Research
    •          Students (Must be currently enrolled or recent Spring 2017 graduate)


    2017 AWARDS JURY: 

    Danial Hanes, AIA


    Architect | Columbus Architectural Studios | Columbus, Ohio

    Danial was born in Alaska to Midwesterners who were long on love but short on spelling ability. He grew up in many cities and Air force bases throughout the world. Right out of Architectural school he started working on many large, complex sports projects across the country including Chase Field, Miami Heat Arena, an Olympic Stadium in Atlanta, and Madison Square Garden.

    Danial moved with his family to Columbus in 1999 and has since worked on many notable Columbus projects, including: Huntington Ballpark, The Scioto Mile, Nationwide Arena District, Northbank and Parks Edge condominiums. Danial has also been involved in the local design community as a guest Critic for the Knowlton School Architecture and served as a board member for the Center for Architecture and Design.


    Nick Gilliland, ASLA

    Landscape Architect | REALM Collaborative | Columbus, Ohio

    Nick, a partner at REALM Collaborative, is a highly effective project leader recognized for his ability to listen, to organize and to lead. He works closely with clients to ensure that their intentions are understood and implemented to the highest standards. Nick is adept at coordinating complex, large-scale projects that range from healthcare, higher education, corporate, and commercial projects to urban mixed-use developments. Nick brings innovative thinking, along with a keen awareness of the technical aspects of site development to the multidisciplinary teams that he collaborates with. He is skilled in facilitation and enabling his teams to produce high performance landscapes that are functional and provocative.

    In addition to his project work, Nick has been key to the success of the Ohio Chapter of the ASLA having served on the Executive leadership since 2009 with roles ranging from Secretary, Vice President of Communications and acting as Chapter President from 2012 - 2013. He currently serves the chapter as Treasurer.


    Mary Ann Lasch, FASLA

    Landscape Architect | President, Catalyst Design and Consulting Limited | Cleveland, Ohio

    Mary Ann Lasch is both an accomplished landscape architect with experience in design, planning, project management, and environmental advocacy; and an organization development consultant with expertise in process facilitation, change management, and strategic planning.

    Her landscape architecture and planning career includes work for architecture firms, real estate developers, national planning agencies, and major corporations. With this broad experience, she understands and addresses planning issues from all sides. Mary Ann establishes clear, realistic, and actionable strategies for planning and real estate development projects worldwide. She then creates land use plans and regulations, master plans, guidebooks, and implementation programs to ensure that development and conservation strategies can be implemented.  


    Justin Parscher

    Assistant Professor of Practice | Knowlton School of Architecture | Columbus, Ohio

    Justin Parscher is an Assistant Professor of Practice at the Knowlton School, teaching design, history, and theory. His work centers on the rhetorical processes through which landscapes are constructed and mediated, from the branding of urban areas to the operation of open-air museums and the day-to-day work of site guides and interpreters. He is the author of the forthcoming book Testing Grounds: 100 Years of Landscape Architecture at Ohio State?, and maintains the site Parscher was previously a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Sam Fox School of Washington University in St. Louis. He received an MLA from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and a BA from Sarah Lawrence College.

    The awards program is juried by a diverse group of professionals and local practitioners who will convene in late July to review submittals and select the winners. The announcement of winners will be made at the 8th annual GALA 2017 in the fall.

    All entries must be purchased and submitted online: There are TWO separate deadlines, you must first register with your entry fee to receive an entry number assignment in order to submit your project by the final deadline.

    Project Image PDF (A multi-page PDF document containing a maximum of (15) pages of drawings and/or photographs shall be uploaded for juror review):

    The PDF file shall be numbered sequentially using your assigned Entry Number. For example, if your assigned Entry Number is 100, your PDF pages should be labeled as 100.01 to 100.15. To insure proper presentation sequencing, your PDF file should be saved as your entry number, for example 100.pdf, and placed in a separate folder inside your Dropbox folder titled 'Project Title - Images' 

    Only PDF files will be accepted, dimensions should be 3300 pixels x 2550 pixels, at 300 pixels per inch (8.5"x11"). Page captions should be properly labeled on the page to correlate with the page names and no more than 40 words per page. Any pages with more than 40 description words per page will result in disqualification, this does not include text on plan graphics or any other graphic text. (See templates available for download below.)

    One (1) 36”x 36” PDF Display Graphic (Saved in high resolution 200 ppi (pixels per inch) format. In the event of a winning entry, the graphic will be printed and displayed at GALA 2017 and at the Center for Architecture and Design. The Display Graphic should be a way to explain the project to the public. The display should include a  'Project Identification Label', such as a firm logo with the project name and location, and may also include brief written statements. (Please save the  Display Graphic as follows: 'YourProjectName_Display.pdf')

     **Communications + Research Category Entrants Only- Unlike the other categories, submissions in the Communications & Research Category may include alternate items. If submitting a booklet or video, a copy of the booklet or video should be included with the entry submission. To the best extent possible (without editing or defacing the communications item) please conceal the identity of the author, publisher, etc., on the item.

    The use of powerpoint presentations (unless they are part of the Communications + Research Category) will result in disqualification.

    Entrants are responsible for clearing photographs with photographers for publication and reproduction by OCASLA. OCASLA will provide proper photography credit when using photos, but will not assume responsibility for any copyrights or photography fees.

    Please note that the Press Release Form that was required last year is NOT required this year.
